On November 4, Kenyan newspapers reported that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to back former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in a new alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The emerging coalition is seen as a strategic effort to unite key political figures from Central, Eastern, and Western Kenya in a bid to challenge President William Ruto’s administration.
According to the reports, Gachagua has reached a political understanding with Kalonzo, where he would support the Wiper leader’s presidential bid in exchange for significant representation within the next government.
Fred Matiang’i, who has been largely quiet since leaving office, is expected to play a major role in the alliance, possibly as a prime minister or chief minister should the coalition win power.
Gachagua is reportedly confident that he can rally at least 70 percent of the Mount Kenya vote to Kalonzo’s camp, while relying on Kalonzo to consolidate the Eastern bloc and Matiang’i to deliver the larger Gusii vote. Together, the trio is believed to be working toward forming a broad-based national coalition that could command a majority of the national vote.
Political insiders note that the alliance also seeks to attract other opposition leaders such as Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa to strengthen its regional and ethnic balance. However, cracks have begun to appear over the choice of a presidential flag bearer, with some camps preferring Kalonzo while others insist Matiang’i would be a stronger candidate.
Despite the internal differences, Gachagua has maintained that unity remains the coalition’s top priority. He has publicly declared his willingness to support any leader chosen through consensus, emphasizing that what matters most is restoring economic fairness, regional balance, and national cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
