Political temperatures in Mbeere North have risen sharply as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua intensify their campaigns ahead of the upcoming by-election.
The two leaders, once key allies in the Mt Kenya political bloc, are now engaged in a fierce battle for regional influence and control.
Earlier this week, Kindiki proclaimed himself the new Mt Kenya kingpin, a move that came only days after Gachagua made a similar declaration.
Their overlapping ambitions have now boiled over into open confrontation.
Gachagua, speaking on Mwandeni Radio on Thursday night, accused Kindiki of “copying” his campaign style and lacking originality.
He claimed the deputy president was mimicking everything he did on the campaign trail — from taking tea with locals to chewing muguka in the streets.
According to Gachagua, this imitation shows Kindiki is under pressure from President William Ruto to deliver the Mbeere North seat at all costs.
The former deputy president alleged that the president issued tough instructions, warning of consequences should UDA fail to clinch the seat.
The by-election has attracted three top contenders: Newton Karish of DP, Leonard Muthende of UDA, and Duncan Mbui of CCK.
Gachagua is rallying behind Karish, supported by former CS Justin Muturi and a host of opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa.
The opposition camp accuses Kindiki of using state machinery to intimidate their supporters, claims the DP’s team has dismissed as desperate propaganda.
Kindiki, on his part, has hit back strongly, accusing Gachagua of disrespect and failed leadership during his time as deputy president.
He criticized Gachagua’s declaration as Mt Kenya kingpin, arguing that his “poor performance” in office led to his removal in 2024.
As the by-election approaches, the rivalry between the two leaders has become symbolic of the wider scramble for Mt Kenya’s political future — with Mbeere North emerging as the battlefield that could determine who holds real influence in the region.
