A young man who was injured during recent protests has found himself back in hospital after doctors discovered bandages had been left inside his body following surgery.
The man, identified as Wambua, had been admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during the demonstrations.
At first, he thought he had recovered, but pain returned weeks later, forcing him to seek more medical help.
According to Wambua, his body started swelling and he experienced sharp stomach pains that did not go away.
When he went back to hospital, doctors carried out further tests and were shocked to find that surgical bandages had been left inside him after the first operation.
This mistake caused a lot of discomfort and risked creating infections inside his body.
The hospital has since readmitted him to remove the remaining materials and help him recover fully.
While speaking from his hospital bed, Wambua explained that the experience has been both painful and frightening.
“I thought I was healing, but the pain kept getting worse. I never imagined that something had been forgotten inside me,” he said.
The incident has raised questions about the quality of medical care given to protest victims and other patients in public hospitals.
Health experts say leaving surgical materials inside a patient is a serious error that can lead to long-term complications or even death if not corrected quickly.
They add that hospitals must follow strict procedures during operations to ensure all equipment and materials are properly counted and removed before closing up a wound.
Human rights groups have also expressed concern, saying victims of protests are already suffering from violence, and such medical mistakes only add to their pain.
They are calling on the Ministry of Health to investigate how the error happened and to make sure hospitals improve their standards.
For Wambua, the main hope is to heal completely and return to his normal life. “I just want to get better and move on,” he said.
His case has become an example of why accountability in healthcare is important, especially for patients who depend on public hospitals after emergencies.
