The United Opposition is currently made up of Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang'i, Justin Muturi, George Natembea, Eugene Wamalwa and others. The team is expected to front one candidate to face president William Ruto in the next general election.
However, there is one members of the team who might defect from the opposition before the next general election. This is the ex-Interior CS Fred Matiang'i who is also a presidential aspirant. Matiang'i had been unveiled by Jubilee party as their presidential candidate.
The fact that Matiang'i has been front by Jubilee seem like it doesn't sit well with the DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua. Jubilee is one of the Mt Kenya parties and producing a presidential contender will definitely revive it and it will challenge DCP for influence in the Mt Kenya region.
Gachagua will definitely attempt to stop Matiang'i from flying the United Opposition flag under Jubilee party ticket. The Star newspaper published last week that the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has singlehandedly arranged the opposition line-up for the next poll.
In the line-up, Gachagua is planning to support Kalonzo Musyoka and George Natembea ticket for the top seat. Fred Matiang'i is to be the Prime Minister in the coalition if they win the election as per Gachagua's will.
The former president Uhuru Kenyatta recently asked the members of his Jubilee party to respect Rigathi Gachagua and stop saying bad things about him. While responding to that, Gachagua said he is the undisputed kingpin of Mt Kenya and whatever he says is final.
This seems like Gachagua is chest thumping and feels he is the one calling the shot in Mt Kenya region. This has definitely not been received well by Uhuru Kenyatta who also feels he is a Mt Kenya leader.
The supremacy battle within the United Opposition especially between Uhuru Kenyatta and Rigathi has led to waning unity of the coalition.
Uhuru might feel belittled by Gachagua and pull out together with Fred Matiang'i from the united opposition before the next general election.
