This follows a statement he shared announcing that the opposition will form a “People’s IEBC” to act as a watchdog against the newly appointed electoral commission.
In the joint statement signed by Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, Justin Muturi, and Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the opposition dismissed President William Ruto’s recent IEBC appointments as biased and politically motivated.
They claimed the new commissioners were handpicked to serve the interests of Ruto’s camp ahead of the 2027 general election.
“We will not sit back and watch the subversion of democracy. We are taking immediate steps to establish a People’s IEBC—a citizen-led watchdog that will mirror the official commission and hold it to the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and constitutionalism,” read the statement shared on Kalonzo’s X.
The group also accused President Ruto of manipulating the process by picking loyalists, warning that the integrity of future elections was now under threat.
They further alleged that even opposition figure Raila Odinga had silently approved the questionable appointments.
But the announcement sparked immediate backlash from Kenyans online, many of whom accused Kalonzo and the opposition of hypocrisy and confusion.
“Is this the same Kalonzo who disowned the NADCO report that he chaired? Why then did he push for Koki Muli to be on the panel?” wrote one user named Otieno.
“You said even if Ruto was IEBC chair, you'd still beat him. Let’s stick to that!” another commented.
Others questioned the contradiction in the team’s messaging.
“Just yesterday Gachagua said Charles Nyachae should lead IEBC. Now he’s Ruto’s puppet? The confusion in your team is shocking,” one post read.
Some remarks turned humorous, with one user writing, “Kalonzo won’t accept anything—even if you told him he’s Musyoka.”
