A shocking tragedy unfolded in South B, Nairobi, on November 18, when delivery rider Anthony Otieno Olwal was brutally killed after delivering a high-end smartphone.

Olwal, a father of three, had left a Nairobi shop earlier that morning to deliver an iPhone 17 Pro Max to a client at Meridian Apartments, not knowing that it would be his last trip.

Family members described the morning as ordinary, with Olwal appearing cheerful and focused on completing his deliveries.

He maintained his usual routine, unaware that danger awaited him at the apartment where the phone was to be delivered.

Investigators revealed that the smartphone order was placed through WhatsApp by a man claiming to be in Eldoret.

The man instructed the seller to have the phone delivered to a relative, Hilary, at a guesthouse in the Sana Sana area of South B.

Leaked WhatsApp chats showed that the buyer initially asked for a 256GB orange iPhone 17 Pro Max. When informed that the price was KSh 225,000, he requested a discount, eventually agreeing to pay KSh 220,000.

Once the deal was confirmed, he provided Hilary’s contact information and requested delivery through Olwal.

Olwal’s wife, Eunice Atieno, recalled that she last spoke to him around 10:30 a.m., when he confirmed arriving at the apartment and promised to call back. Hours later, both his phone numbers went offline, raising immediate concern.

Tragically, his body was later found in Room 14 on the fourth floor, showing signs of a brutal assault.

A postmortem report indicated that Olwal had been struck repeatedly with a heavy object, resulting in fatal injuries. Police also recovered a knife, a metal rod, and the iPhone he was delivering.

His motorbike was parked outside the guesthouse, untouched. According to authorities, the room had been booked shortly before the delivery by two men who paid in cash, but fled after the attack.

Police are actively investigating the murder and following multiple leads to locate the suspects. While the motive remains unclear, authorities are considering whether it was a robbery, a targeted attack, or a combination of both.

The incident has sparked nationwide outrage. Social media users and delivery workers expressed shock and fear, demanding justice for Olwal and better safety measures for riders.

Many argued that delivery personnel are often exposed to life-threatening situations due to online orders and cash transactions.

This is not the first time delivery workers in Nairobi have faced violent attacks. Recent months have seen an increase in crimes targeting riders, particularly those handling high-value products.

The authorities have called for tighter monitoring of online orders and closer security in residential estates.

In a related case, a taxi driver in Murang’a discovered a murdered woman’s body disguised as a parcel, further highlighting the dangers delivery workers face.

These incidents have raised public awareness about the vulnerability of individuals performing everyday jobs in Kenya’s urban areas.

Olwal’s family continues to mourn his loss while calling for swift action. They described him as a hardworking, responsible father and husband, who only wanted to provide for his children.

“My brother was tortured, and the pain of losing him is unbearable,” said a family member.

“We want the people responsible for this tragedy found and brought to justice.”

As the investigation unfolds, the case serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by delivery riders and the need for stronger safety protocols.

Kenya’s police have vowed to ensure that perpetrators are apprehended and that such crimes do not go unpunished.

Anthony Olwal’s death has left a void in his family and community. Known for his dedication and kindness, he is remembered as a man committed to providing for his children and supporting his loved ones.
