A young Zambian police officer has died in a shocking incident that is now being linked to financial stress.
The officer, identified as Constable Eric Ikowa, was found dead early Tuesday morning after reportedly taking his own life with his service weapon.
Ikowa had recently been recruited into the Zambia Police Service and was serving under the Mufulira detachment.
According to reports shared through voice notes and images circulating on social media, Ikowa had been struggling with debt and appeared emotionally distressed in the days leading up to his death.
People close to him said he stopped responding to phone calls the day before, and colleagues grew worried when they could not reach him.
The tragic incident took place at Slag Dump No. 1 within Mopani Copper Mines premises, where Ikowa had been assigned to work.
It is believed the officer shot himself at around 6:00 am.
He was discovered by fellow officers near a pit, still holding his firearm.
Sources claim Ikowa’s last moments were spent alone, and there was no immediate indication that anyone nearby could have intervened.
His coworkers who found him were left shocked and emotionally shaken by the scene.
Although the Zambia Police Service has not yet issued an official public statement, internal communication confirms that the young officer died while on duty.
Reports suggest that Ikowa was under pressure due to financial problems, and some of his friends had tried reaching out when they sensed he was overwhelmed.
However, many now regret not being able to help in time.
The tragic case has sparked national conversations about mental health, debt, and the emotional challenges facing members of the police service.
Officers are often expected to remain strong and composed, but many struggle quietly with personal issues that go unseen and untreated.
