Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sharply criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the Mbeere North by-election campaign gathers momentum.

Speaking at the Kyenire People’s Forum held in Kamukanya, Evurore Ward, Embu County, Kindiki condemned Gachagua’s door-to-door campaign approach, claiming it does not respect local cultural norms.

Kindiki particularly took issue with Gachagua’s habit of visiting homes and sharing tea in kitchens with women during his campaign tours.

He argued that such practices are unfamiliar and inappropriate in the local setting, emphasizing the importance of consulting community elders first.

“Sasa wale ndugu zangu wanazurura hapa na kunywa chai kwa kitchen ya kina mama. Waambiwe kwanza sisi hapa, wazee wa sehemu hii, hatuingiangi kitchen,” Kindiki said.

He added that respecting traditional leadership and community protocols is crucial for anyone seeking public office.

The Deputy President’s remarks are seen as part of a broader strategy to appeal to local sentiments and underscore his connection with the community’s cultural values.

By highlighting what he describes as Gachagua’s unconventional campaign methods, Kindiki seeks to position himself as a candidate who understands and respects local traditions.

The comments come as political tensions rise in Mbeere North, with campaigns intensifying ahead of the by-election.

Both Kindiki and Gachagua are actively engaging with residents, each using different strategies to win support.

While Gachagua’s approach focuses on direct interaction with households, Kindiki emphasizes adherence to cultural norms and community structures.

At the same time, Gachagua’s door-to-door visits have drawn attention for their personal touch, appealing to residents who appreciate close contact with candidates.
