Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said he is ready to support whichever candidate the Opposition Alliance nominates for the 2027 presidential race.

He emphasized that the selection must be based on a scientific and widely acceptable method to maximize chances of defeating President William Ruto.

Speaking Wednesday morning on NTV’s ‘Fixing The Nation’ program, Matiang’i stated, “It is important for our leaders in the opposition to unite behind a single candidate so we can succeed in our mission to remove the current government from power.”

He added, “If the candidate is not me, I will support them respectfully in line with the decision of the Opposition Alliance.”

Matiang’i defended his presidential ambition by citing his ten years of service as a minister under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, giving him insight into the challenges facing the nation.

On October 30, Jubilee Party, led by Uhuru Kenyatta, officially endorsed Matiang’i as its 2027 presidential candidate.

At the party’s National Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni confirmed that Matiang’i had submitted his application and it was unanimously approved.

Kioni also announced that Matiang’i was appointed Deputy Leader of Jubilee and will represent the party in opposition forums.

“Since our leader will not contest the presidency, Matiang’i, as his deputy, will represent Jubilee at opposition platforms,” Kioni explained.

Matiang’i dismissed claims of divisions within the opposition, especially after remarks from a senior party leader describing Jubilee as a “red wolf.”

He reassured that the party remains committed to unity and disciplined coordination in the 2027 race.

Observers say Matiang’i’s position strengthens the opposition’s chances if they can rally behind a single candidate.

His endorsement is expected to influence negotiations among opposition parties and enhance strategic planning for the upcoming elections.

The former minister’s experience and leadership are likely to play a crucial role in guiding the coalition toward a unified front.
