The Baringo Senatorial by-election has taken a fresh twist after ODM legislator Caleb Amisi openly urged residents to express their frustration by backing an independent candidate rather than the one endorsed by President William Ruto.

His statement has sparked fresh debate in a county already rattled by Gideon Moi’s recent decision to align with the Broad-Based Government.

In a bold Facebook post, Amisi rallied locals to turn their disappointment into action, calling on them to run behind a candidate free from state influence. The remarks were captured in this post that has since gained traction online.

His intervention has only added to the already tense atmosphere as parties scramble for control of the Rift Valley county.

For years, Baringo politics has been shaped by the Moi family. But Gideon’s move to work with the commander in chief has left a vacuum among his former loyalists, many of whom feel betrayed.

Amisi’s message taps directly into this discontent, portraying the by-election as an opportunity for voters to push back against what he describes as political imposition.

The strategy, if it gains traction, could split the local vote and weaken the chances of Ruto’s candidate cruising to an easy victory. For Raila Odinga’s allies like Amisi, this is more than a county battle, it is about testing whether regions historically seen as strongholds of the President can still produce independent-minded results.

At the same time, the by-election is shaping up to be a test of unity within UDA itself. With whispers of internal splits between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s loyalists, Amisi’s call might exploit those cracks to the benefit of opposition-aligned forces.
