Despite maintaining a low profile and making only occasional public appearances, the shadow of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta continues to loom large over Kenya’s political arena, with signs pointing to his potentially significant influence on the outcome of the 2027 General Election.

Though not actively involved in frontline politics, Mr. Kenyatta still attracts considerable political attention.

He regularly hosts guests at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu South (Kiambu County), sends subtle political messages, and is reported to be engaged in behind-the-scenes political planning to support his allies ahead of the next election.

From Mt. Kenya politics to opposition restructuring and even the Gen Z movement, it is becoming increasingly clear that Mr. Kenyatta is orchestrating political strategies from behind the scenes, raising questions about whether he plans to return to active politics, not for himself, but for those he believes should lead the country.

Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni stated that the party, led by Mr. Kenyatta, is considering former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for 2027—a sentiment that Mr. Kenyatta has not publicly opposed.

“People remember how he (Uhuru) warned them against electing Ruto. All he wants is good leadership because he once led the country and did a commendable job. People are looking to him for direction,” said Mr. Kioni.

Despite declaring his retirement from politics, Mr. Kenyatta’s actions continue to stir strong reactions. He remains a powerful voice shaping political discourse and shifting dynamics as 2027 approaches.
