The decision for the former prime minister Raila Odinga, forming a working relationship with president William Ruto rattled both his close allies, supporters and the opposition outfit.

ODM secretary general and Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya governor James Orengo among others, had opposed this move saying that it will be detrimental to the legacy of Raila Odinga.

On his part, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has claimed that since the ODM leader joined the broad based arrangements, his political influence dwindled and is almost destroyed.

Speaking on Sunday, 2025, Senator Richard Onyonka noted that the moment Raila and Ruto formed the broad-based government, Raila Odinga’s political influence was levelled to the ground, despite agreeing to help Dr Ruto bring stability in the Kenya Kwanza government after chaotic protests by the Gen Zs last year.

The vocal legislator noted that prior the formation of broad-based government, the ODM and UDA had agreed on several proposals, which up to today are yet to be implemented.

“Many of us were initially in favor of Raila joining the government to support President William Ruto because the government was unstable and there was uncertainty about what needed to be done. However, many people were irritated by the changes that occurred along the way because we said that this government and our party leader had some low-hanging fruit. We could have told William Ruto, "We want to support you, but rally your troops and fix some matters concerning Kenyans.” he said.

Onyonka added that even though Raila and Ruto had agreed to have inclusive policies and good governance, under Ruto's leadership, not a single one of those principles had been carried out; rather, it had destroyed Raila Odinga's political standing and undermined his once-strong credibility.

“To my party leader, Raila Odinga, I say this with humility: the project that William Ruto's national government was supposed to undertake was specifically aimed at the historically marginalized Nyanza region, and his reference to himself as a Luo leader destroyed him and took away his credibility,” he added.
