Former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri sharply criticised Nyamira legislator Patrick Kibagendi after the MP urged leaders to rally behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The exchange reignited political debate within the Gusii region over Matiang’i’s relevance in national politics.
The incident occurred on Sunday during a local meeting where Kibagendi called on residents to appreciate Matiang’i’s previous service and consider supporting him in future political plans.
His remarks drew immediate reactions from Ngunjiri, who dismissed the idea as misplaced and politically misleading.
Ngunjiri maintained that the era of using state power to intimidate citizens or political opponents should not be forgotten, alluding to events that occurred under Matiang’i’s tenure. His comments reflected a wider discontent among leaders who accused the former CS of authoritarian conduct during his time in office.
Kibagendi’s appeal appeared to aim at reviving regional unity and repositioning Matiang’i within Kenya’s shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Ngunjiri’s response exposed the lingering divisions between leaders aligned with President William Ruto’s administration and those sympathetic to opposition voices.
The public debate underscored how historical political rivalries continue to influence current alignments. Many observers interpreted Ngunjiri’s remarks as a signal that reconciliation between Ruto’s allies and former state operatives remains far from reality.
The renewed clash also highlighted the uncertainty facing former senior government officials as they navigate Kenya’s volatile post-election politics.
With calls for unity on one side and demands for accountability on the other, the conversation around Matiang’i’s political future remains deeply polarising within both the Gusii community and the national stage.
