Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for skipping the state funeral and burial of the late Raila Odinga.

Speaking on social media, Wambugu dismissed Gachagua’s claim that safety concerns forced him to stay away.

Wambugu argued that other national leaders, including President William Ruto and Kalonzo Musyoka, managed to attend the funeral despite busy schedules and ongoing by-elections.

He questioned why Gachagua would present political commitments as an excuse when others faced the same pressures.

“Other leaders are busy too, yet they found time. If he didn’t want to go, he should just say so and stop making excuses,” Wambugu said, highlighting what he sees as inconsistency in Gachagua’s reasoning.

Gachagua had earlier stated that “some police officers” warned him of a possible plot to attack him during the funeral events, prompting his absence. He later promised to visit Odinga’s family in Bondo after the by-elections to pay his respects.

The criticism comes amid a wider debate on social media, where Kenyans remain divided between supporting Gachagua’s caution and questioning the credibility of his explanation.
