Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has declared he will challenge Rigathi Gachagua’s political dominance in Mount Kenya, signaling the start of intense political activity in the region as the 2027 elections approach.
Speaking at Nkubu Stadium in Imenti South, Meru County, Kindiki presided over an empowerment event for over 13,000 members of small businesses and community groups.
During his speech, Kindiki highlighted President William Ruto’s commitment to improving the economy.
He praised government programs supporting small traders, SACCOs, and community organizations, saying these initiatives aim to reduce poverty and create opportunities for local families.
“Our work is to lift communities and help people grow their businesses,” Kindiki said.
“Politics will come later. First, we must focus on real development that improves lives.”
Although the event centered on economic empowerment, Kindiki used the platform to deliver a clear political message.
He warned that opponents within Mount Kenya, including Gachagua, would face a formidable challenge once the Kenya Kwanza political machinery is fully operational.
“Ruto knows politics very well,” Kindiki told the cheering crowd.
“We have not officially started our campaign. When we do, those opposing us will find it hard to compete. This region will be on fire politically.”
The remarks come as debates continue over who holds true influence in Mount Kenya.
Gachagua, the deputy president, has been recognized by some local leaders as the region’s main political figure.
Kung’u Muigai, a cousin of former president Uhuru Kenyatta, described Gachagua as the area’s natural leader and urged residents to support him.
Kindiki’s statements, however, suggest he is determined to assert his presence and challenge Gachagua’s influence.
Political analysts note that the Mount Kenya landscape is becoming more competitive, with shifting alliances and new leaders seeking to gain ground ahead of the national elections.
The deputy president encouraged residents to focus on grassroots development, emphasizing that strong local communities provide a foundation for political success.
He argued that empowering small traders and community groups not only supports families but also strengthens the region’s overall economy.
As Mount Kenya watches these developments, the rivalry between Kindiki and Gachagua is expected to intensify, creating a politically charged atmosphere in the lead-up to 2027.
