The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will no longer function as an opposition party in Kenya, according to National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed.

Speaking during a public event in Migori County, the Suna East MP declared that ODM is ready to work with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration to advance the country’s development agenda.

Junet, a close ally of ODM party leader Raila Odinga, said the party’s decision is guided by the need to prioritize national unity and service delivery over partisan politics.

“ODM is no longer in the opposition. We have chosen to collaborate with the government so that our people can benefit from development projects,” he said, adding that the country has moved past the heated 2022 General Election season.

The announcement is being viewed as a major shift in Kenya’s political landscape, where ODM has long played the role of the main opposition party.

For years, Raila Odinga and his allies have positioned themselves as watchdogs of government, holding successive administrations accountable and championing reforms.

Political analysts suggest that the move could signal a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

By working with the government, ODM may seek to secure key positions in state agencies and influence policy decisions, while ensuring that its regions do not miss out on infrastructure projects and funding.

However, the declaration has sparked mixed reactions among ODM supporters. Some party loyalists have welcomed the decision, saying it is time for leaders to focus on development rather than endless political battles.

Others have expressed concern that abandoning the opposition role could weaken oversight of government and leave citizens with no strong voice to check excesses of power.

Junet assured Kenyans that ODM will continue to champion accountability even as it collaborates with the government.

“Cooperation does not mean silence. We will still speak out on matters affecting Kenyans, but we believe unity is the way forward,” he emphasized.
