A heartbreaking story has emerged of a Kenyan nurse who fell victim to human trafficking after leaving the country in search of better opportunities.

In July, Ms Purity Cherono from Rongai, Nakuru County, was introduced to what she believed was a life-changing chance to work in India as a nurse.

As a mother of two who had been struggling with casual jobs, the offer seemed like a golden opportunity to provide a brighter future for her children.

Armed with hope, she left for India, but her dreams were quickly shattered.

Upon arrival, she was confronted with a harsh reality and coerced into sex work.

She explained that she was excited about the travel opportunity, but soon after arriving, she fell sick and could not work.

After recovering, she was transferred to another city where she was shown the nature of the job.

She said she was shocked because that was not what had been agreed back in Kenya.

Her passport was confiscated when she refused to comply, leaving her stranded.

She added that she had never been a sex worker and had only travelled with hopes of giving her children a better future.

Now stuck in India, Ms Cherono revealed that her traffickers demanded Sh500,000 to release her passport.

With no rent or food, she has appealed to Kenyans for help to return home.
