Grief has engulfed a Murang’a family after four sisters died together with eight other relatives in a horrific accident at Kikopey along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Photos of the sisters, identified as Penninah, Naomi, Joyce and Catherine, have since emerged, painting the picture of a family that has been robbed of nearly an entire generation.

The accident occurred when the 14-seater matatu they were travelling in collided head-on with a trailer.

The matatu was driven by their 29-year-old nephew, Elijah Mwithika, who also perished.

The family was heading to Rongai in Nakuru County to visit two sick relatives when the journey ended in tragedy.

Among the dead were the family’s patriarch, Elijah Mburu, aged 90, and his wife, Lydia Njeri, aged 76.

Several grandchildren, uncles and aunts were also in the ill-fated matatu.

The loss has left the homestead in Kandara in deep mourning as relatives and neighbours struggle to comprehend the scale of the tragedy.

Three survivors, including a child, are receiving treatment in Nakuru hospitals as their families pray for recovery.

At the same time, bodies of the deceased have been preserved at Nakuru Mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations and subsequent burial plans.

The family has appealed for government support to offset funeral and medical expenses, noting the weight of planning multiple burials.

Road safety stakeholders have also renewed calls for stricter checks on public service vehicles, pointing to rising fatalities on major highways.

What was meant to be a family visit has now turned into one of the most painful chapters for the Murang’a community, leaving behind a trail of grief, unanswered questions and shattered lives.
