A nurse attached to a private medical facility in Bungoma has been arrested after being found sexually assaulting a patient admitted for wound dressing and malaria treatment.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Martin Wekesa, was reportedly discovered in the act by a colleague who was conducting routine ward rounds on Friday night.
Reports indicate that the victim is a Form Three student who had been receiving treatment at the hospital when the incident occurred.
The matter was immediately reported to the police, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
Authorities disclosed that the nurse had earlier admitted to the incident before the management of the facility.
The family of the minor expressed concerns that there was an attempt to cover up the crime after the victim was allegedly ordered to bathe in an effort to interfere with evidence.
They condemned the actions and demanded justice for their daughter.
Bungoma South Police Commander William Letting confirmed that the suspect is in custody and will be arraigned in court.
He further cautioned against the rising cases of sexual violence in the area, warning that strict legal measures will be taken against perpetrators.
The incident has left residents in shock as questions continue to be raised about the safety of patients in health facilities.
Calls have been made for tighter monitoring of hospital staff to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable patients, especially minors.
