There was drama at the Mombasa High Court after controversial preacher Pastor Paul Mackenzie made two unusual requests before the judge, claiming that he feared for his life while in custody.

In a video that has since circulated online, Mackenzie, speaking calmly in Swahili, politely asked the court to issue specific orders concerning how he should be served meals and how he should receive medical attention while at Shimo La Tewa Prison, where he is currently being held.

Mackenzie, who is the prime suspect in the Shakahola massacre, where hundreds of his followers reportedly starved to death, told the court that prison officials were allegedly preparing “special meals” for him, a move he claimed to distrust.

He asked the court to direct that he be served the same meals as other inmates to avoid any suspicion of foul play.

On medical matters, Mackenzie requested that he should not be taken to any hospital either within or outside the prison without a direct court order. He argued that he feared he might be given treatment for an illness he doesn’t have or possibly harmed while being transferred.

The judge acknowledged his concerns and noted that the matter would be reviewed according to prison and court procedures.

Mackenzie remains in custody as investigations into the Shakahola tragedy continue to unfold, with families of the victims still seeking justice.
